This chart provides approximate times for starting transplants and direct seeding into the garden in our climate. The month for transplants is the earliest recommended time. For many short-season crops you can continue to start more every 2 or 3 weeks, well into the growing season.
Unless otherwise indicated, seedlings are ready to transplant to the garden in 4-6 weeks.
Transplant starts
Feb: lettuce, leek (3 months), onion(3 months), spinach, swiss chard
Mar: brocoli (6 weeks), cabbage, cauliflower, chinese greens, herbs, kale, pepper (3 months), tomato (8-12 weeks)
Apr: cucumber*, eggplant (8 weeks), melon, squash*
* start in fiber pots which you plant with the seedling
Direct Seeding
Feb-Mar: pea, broad bean
Mar: potatoes, salad greens, radish, swiss chard
Apr: beet, brocolli, cabbage, carrot, leek, onion, parsnip, turnip
May: corn, cucumber, squash
Oct: garlic, broad bean
